Blur, masks & redaction
A mask blurs (or spotlights) a rectangle of the frame. It’s how an API key, a customer’s name, or your entire inbox ships safely.
Draw one
Section titled “Draw one”Press ⇧M and drag the rectangle on the canvas — that region is masked from the playhead onward, for three seconds to begin with. Draw as many as you need, as small as you need.
Move and resize it
Section titled “Move and resize it”Click a mask on the canvas to select it. Drag the box to move it, or a handle to resize it; the blur follows as you drag. Escape lets go.
Timing
Section titled “Timing”Every mask has a chip in the Masks lane. Drag the chip to move the mask in time, or either edge to change how long it lasts. The Masks tab lists them all with where each starts and how long it runs.
- A mask drawn while the recording is on screen is timed on the recording, so it sticks to the footage through cuts and rearrangement — the blur follows the moment it was drawn on, not a timestamp.
- A mask drawn over a picture, a movie, a title or a gap is pinned to the timeline where you drew it, and stays put when clips around it move.
- Over appended takes the original’s masks stay off; draw new ones on the take if it needs them.
- Masks blur whatever is under them — the recording, an imported picture or movie — and render in preview and export identically.
