Kapture does not collect your recordings, your transcripts, your event logs or your projects. They are files on your Mac and they stay there.

What stays on your machine

Screen, camera, microphone and system audio capture, the input event log, zoom analysis, transcription and export all run locally on your Mac. Transcription uses a Whisper model that runs on device — audio is not sent to a transcription service, and recording and editing work with no network connection at all.

There is no Kapture account. You do not sign up, and there is no server holding a copy of anything you record.

What leaves your machine, and when

  • Buying a licence. Checkout is handled by Stripe. Your card details go to Stripe and never to us — we receive the email address on the payment and the licence it belongs to, so that we can issue the licence and let you recover it later.
  • Licence checks. An activated copy contacts our licence endpoint to confirm the licence is valid. That request carries the licence key and a machine identifier so that a licence can cover two Macs and no more. It does not carry anything about what you record.
  • Updates. Kapture checks for new versions using Sparkle, which fetches a file from our update host. That request looks like any other download and tells us nothing beyond the fact that a copy checked.
  • Exporting or sharing. When you export a file and put it somewhere, that is you moving your own file. Kapture has no upload step and no hosted links.

Permissions the app asks for

macOS requires your explicit permission for each of these, and Kapture uses them only for the feature named:

  • Screen Recording — to capture the screen.
  • Camera and Microphone — to record those sources when you switch them on.
  • Accessibility — to log cursor position and clicks, which is what automatic zoom is derived from.
  • Input Monitoring — to log key presses for the shortcut overlay.
  • Speech Recognition — for on-device transcription.

The event log those last two produce is written into the project package on your disk, next to the video. You can revoke any of these in System Settings → Privacy & Security; the features that depend on them stop working and nothing else changes.

This website

https://kapture.video uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people read. It sets cookies in your browser and reports to Google, who process it on our behalf. We use it to answer questions like how many people reached the download page — not to build a profile of you, and we run no advertising and no advertising pixels.

Your browser's Do Not Track setting, an ad blocker, or Safari's tracking protection will all stop it, and nothing on this site breaks if they do. Our host also records standard server logs for the requests it serves. The public roadmap is hosted by Featurebase and the checkout is hosted by Stripe; both are separate services with their own privacy policies, and following a link to either takes you to them.

None of this touches the app. Kapture itself sends one anonymous ping per launch — a random identifier it invents for itself, and the version — so we know roughly how many people use it. No recordings, no filenames, no account. You can switch even that off:

defaults write com.smallsquare.kapture KaptureDisableUsagePing -bool YES

Your data, and getting rid of it

The only personal data we hold is what a purchase creates: an email address and the licence attached to it. Write to hello@kapture.video to see it, correct it, or have it deleted. Deleting it releases the licence, so ask only when you are done with it.

How long we keep it

Purchase records — the email, the licence key, and which Macs it is active on — are kept for as long as the subscription exists, and afterwards for as long as tax and accounting law requires of any business. Recovery-request counters expire within an hour. Nothing else accumulates, because nothing else is collected.

Who processes it for us

The little we hold passes through three service providers, each doing one job: Stripe (payments — your card details go to Stripe and never reach us), Cloudflare (this website, the licence service and its storage, and routing of inbound email), Resend (delivering licence emails), and Google (website analytics). Each processes data on our instructions under its own security terms. We do not sell or rent personal information to anyone, and we run no advertising.

Security

Licence records live in Cloudflare's storage; secrets are held in its encrypted secret store; machine identifiers are hashed on your Mac before they are sent, so we never receive a raw hardware identifier. No internet system is beyond risk, and we cannot promise perfection — only that the surface is as small as we can make it.

Where it is processed

We operate from the United States and our providers process data in the US and other countries. If you are somewhere whose law treats personal data differently, the email address and licence record a purchase creates will still be processed on US-based infrastructure.

If you are in the EU, UK or a similar jurisdiction

The Small Square LLC is the controller of the purchase data described above. Our legal bases are: performance of a contract (issuing your licence, checking it, emailing it back to you), legitimate interests (preventing abuse of licences and answering support), and legal obligation (keeping purchase records we are required to keep). You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to processing of, and receive a copy of, your personal data, and to complain to your local supervisory authority. Exercise any of these by writing to hello@kapture.video — there is no account system, so email is the mechanism.

If you are in California or a state with a privacy law

We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in the CCPA and similar laws, and we collect only the identifiers a purchase creates. You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of that data by email, and we will not treat you differently for asking.

Children

Kapture and this site are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. A purchase requires a payment method, which in practice requires an adult. If you believe a child's information has reached us, write and we will delete it.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what leaves your machine, the date at the top changes and the change is described in the release notes for the version that introduces it.

Questions about any of this go to hello@kapture.video.
